Every day in Cumberland County, another cat or dog is found wandering alone. Some are frightened. Some are starving. Some are sick or injured. Many were once someone’s beloved pet. Why do people abandon them? Sometimes it’s financial hardship, moving, an unexpected litter, or behavior challenges. But whatever the reason, turning a pet loose doesn’t solve the problem—it simply transfers their suffering to the animal and to an already overwhelmed community. A pet left behind doesn’t magically know how to survive. They face hunger, disease, traffic, predators, harsh weather, and the heartbreaking reality of waiting for a family that never comes back. Our shelters, rescues, and foster homes are working tirelessly, but we cannot rescue our way out of this crisis alone. We need our community’s help. Please spay and neuter your pets. Keep them safely identified with a collar and microchip. If you can no longer care for an animal, reach out before giving up—there may be resources or someone willing to help. And don’t underestimate the power of your voice. Let your county leaders and elected representatives know that animal overpopulation and pet abandonment are real problems that deserve attention. Advocate for stronger support for spay and neuter programs, responsible pet ownership, and effective animal welfare policies. Meaningful change happens when communities speak up. The animals didn’t choose this. But we can choose to be part of the solution. Every responsible decision, every spay or neuter, every adoption, every foster home, every donation, every volunteer hour, every shared post, and every voice raised for change helps build a kinder future for the animals of Cumberland County. 💗

Hard to imagine. I’d give my last dime to take care of my pets. Wish I could save them all.

We are grateful for the work by rescue organizations. We are going through the geriatric phase with two of ours. It’s expensive and time consuming and we get up at 3am when she has a bad night. Then to see neigbor dogs loose and unattended sleeping under trees and wandering the highway because they just bought another new one enrages me.
